Force, mass and acceleration
Data and Equations
Gravitational field strength = 10 N/kg Acceleration due to gravity = 10 m/s2
NB one mark for answer and one mark for correct unit
1. Find the force required to accelerate a car of mass 1300kg at a rate of 3.5m/s2.
2. Find the acceleration of a cricket ball of mass 0.5kg when hit with a force of 15 N. choose unit metre metre/second metre/second squared Newton kilogramme
3. Find the mass of a discus which accelerates at 10m/s2 when thrown with a force of 12N.
4. A stone is dropped off a cliff. If it takes 4 seconds to hit the ground calculate the speed with which it hits the ground. choose unit metre metre/second metre/second squared Newton kilogramme
5. A yacht starts from rest and reaches a velocity of 5m/s after 25 seconds.
a) find the acceleration of the yacht choose unit metre metre/second metre/second squared Newton kilogramme
b) find the force produced by the wind if the mass of the yacht is 2000kg.
6. A model rocket has a mass of 5kg. Its engine produces a thrust force of 200N
a) use the equation weight = mass x gravitational field strength, to calculate the weight of the rocket
b) calculate the acceleration of the rocket as it rises off the launch pad (think carefully) choose unit metre metre/second metre/second squared Newton kilogramme
