Lesson
Title: Fire safety — follows on from lesson 4 so objectives
are the same |
NC Ref:5- |
Objectives: MK — burning
requires oxygen and makes new substances; oxygen SK— when
materials such as metals burn they form oxides; some products of burning;
extra care needed if materials are burnt in O~ word equations can
represent reactions; fire will only burn when heat, fuel and 02 are present; oxide,
word equation, Fire Triangle CK — some
ways of putting out fires; mass changes that take place during chemical
reactions |

Lesson
outline: Timing: Registration and starter: Recap the fire triangle, and show fire extinguisher from the lab. 5 How are fires put out? By taking away
something in the triangle. Which of 3? Either cooling (heat taken away) or by stopping 02 getting to the fire. Discuss different types of fire extinguisher -
could read from p.72 — tablefromp.72intobooks. — Could do notes based on the
purple box questions into books. Introduce the practical — making a model fire
extinguisher — 7Fd/3 or 7Fd/4. PRAC and clear-up. Could finish by using your 'extinguisher' put
out a row of lit candles Alternative practical — make paper kettles
— paper does not set on fire be its kept cool by the water. Plenary
to discuss the reaction — acid and carbonate used to put out a fire with 5 the carbon dioxide gas
released by the reaction. 15 Could
look at one of the worksheets which would otherwise be homework if there
is time. |
